Mount Bachelor and Hoodoo Ski Resort
These are the only two ski resorts in Central Oregon. Both offer Nordic and classic style skiing. Mount Bachelor is the closest, located just a half hour outside of Bend. It’s got miles of intermediate and advanced trails, and the Summit Express chairlift will take you all the way to the top of the 9,065-foot summit.
Hoodoo is an hour outside of Bend near the small town of Sisters. Unlike Mount Bachelor, Hoodoo offers night skiing. Between the two, Mount Bachelor provides more intermediate trails than Hoodoo, but Hoodoo is closer to many of our favorite backcountry trails.
Sunriver Oregon Activities at Mount Thielsen
Speaking of backcountry trails, you should consider Mount Thielsen when you’re in the area. If you’re looking for more of an adventure than a ski resort, but you’re not quite ready for full-on ski mountaineering, consider the beautiful Mount Thielsen. This extinct shield volcano is an hour and a half outside of Sunriver. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart and offers some of the best Sunriver Oregon skiing. Skiers have ridden lines of up to 3,600 vertical feet.
Three Sisters Backcountry Skiing
For those with strong navigation skills, skiing in the Three Sisters backcountry is a chance for some solitary, challenging skiing. If you’d like the assistance of a guide, Three Sisters Backcountry is a family-owned business that offers skiing trips complete with yurts that have saunas and full kitchens.
If you’re looking for a longer trip, they offer a three-day, two-night Backcountry Nordic Hut to Hut Traverse, a self-guided 22-mile route along the eastern boundary of the Three Sisters Wilderness.
