However, when you’re hoping to match up a relaxing getaway with opportunities to indulge in Hawaiian culture, make sure to book a vacation during the last weekend of June and the first week of July when the Kau Wela Summer Festival, one of the top things to do in Kauai, comes to town.

Fun, Food and Culture

The Kau Wela Summer Festival, one of the many Kauai attractions, is hosted at the Kamokila Village annually and provides an opportunity for locals and visitors to mix and mingle in the name of culture, history and beautiful and traditional performances. This two-day event delivers up dance, food, re-enactments and musical competitions that keep competitors and participants engaged in the many activities from start to finish. The festival begins at 9:00 am each day and runs until approximately 5:00 pm.

Competitive Performances

Tahitian dance competitions as well as drumming competitions are held on the center stage at the Kukui Grove Mall and are open for spectators to enjoy. Performances are bound to be a colorful and creative mixing of modern flair and traditional skills. Several booths featuring Polynesian arts and crafts will also be on hand for those looking for a place to browse local goods available for purchase. The ukulele contest is held on the second day of the festival at Kamokila Village. This contest is followed up by the highlight of the festival which includes a re-enactment of llima, Princess of Wailua making her way down the river in a double canoe with her many warriors at her side. Decorated in traditional costume, this river arrival is always a thrilling sight for visitors to the event.
