Showcasing the technological achievements in transportation over the past 150+ years, the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum in Hood River, OR, has one of the largest collections of operational antique planes and automobiles in the country. Come marvel at the amazing advances and human ingenuity of the past century, but take care if you approach this like any other museum: These aren’t artifacts and historical relics, they are finely tuned machines that are dripping with life!
The Golden Age of Transportation
The majority of the items in the museum’s collection are from the 1920’s to 1940’s, but there are examples of every major automobile and aircraft innovation since the dawn of those modes of transportation in the late 19th century. Antique aircraft include the 1917 Curtiss JN-4D “Jenny,” a classic Piper Cub, and collections of WACO, Stearman, and Aeronca. Each plane in the collection has been lovingly and expertly restored, and expert pilots routinely take them out for shakedown flights to keep them in top-notch operational condition. When it comes to cars, the museum has no shortage of iconic and unique vehicles. From a Locomobile 1923 Model 48 Sportif (only 4 were made each week during the height of production) to Franklins (circa 1909-1919) to classic muscle cars, these antique gems are still as operational and impressive as the day they rolled off the assembly line a century ago.

From pennyfarthing bicycles to hang gliders to vintage tractors, the museum prides itself on showcasing the very best in antique vehicles. They boast an incredible collection of classic motorcycles, from Cushman Eagles to vintage Harleys, as well as a stunning 1947 Indian Chief. There is also an impressive collection of historic military vehicles. Jeeps and supply trucks from WWII, Korea and Vietnam are proudly on display, and you can even hop aboard for a ride on the second Saturday of every month with our volunteer veteran drivers.
