Marchesi Vineyards

Oregon is quietly gaining a reputation for producing premium wines, but did you know you can get a taste of Italy and its fantastic Piedmont grape varietals right here in Hood River? Marchesi Vineyards, the life’s work of Franco Marchesi, a native of Northern Italy, is a loving recreation of that region’s iconic vineyards and styles. Set amongst the foothills of snowcapped Mt. Hood against the backdrop of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, this beautiful and scenic vineyard produces an incredible lineup of robust reds and crisp whites, perfect for any occasion.

The Wines

Thanks to the rich, fertile soil of the Oregonian river valleys and a perfect temperate climate ideally suited to growing grapes, the bounty of Marchesi Vineyards is always on proud display. Their Pinot Grigio is a crisp white with crisp acidity and delicate notes of fruits like apples and apricots, while the Prosecco is robust and sweet with the aroma of apples and baked bread. The Valentino Primitivo (named after Marchesi’s father, and similar in style to a Zinfandel) is an award-winning red with deep berry flavors; it is a must try. Other wines include the classic Italian Sangiovese, a proprietary Rosato, and the award-winning Nebbiolo, each as delicious as the next.

Visiting the Marchesi Vineyards

Stepping onto the lush manicured grounds of the Marchesi Vineyards in Hood River, you will instantly feel like you have been transported to Italy. Crawling vines adorn gazebos, pergolas, and charming arbors, and the views of rolling hills covered in delicate roses is reminiscent of the Old Country. Stroll through a quaint courtyard to the outdoor patio and belly up to the tasting bar, making sure to take in the statuary and Italian murals that decorate the common areas. The tasting room includes indoor and outdoor seating with sweeping views of the fruit-filled hills above the Columbia River, with heaters, blankets, and cozy chairs for those cool Oregon nights. Listen to Franco regale his guests with anecdotes of wine making, tales from Italy, and the history of this noble craft.
