The Highest of the Cascade Lakes
The Cascade Lakes is a series of 14 lakes set along the Cascade Mountain Range, with Todd Lake being the highest. Located over 6000 feet up, it can be found along the base of Broken Top, a stratovolcano. The lake is clear, clean, and unpolluted, due partially in part to the prohibition of motorized craft; you can kayak, paddleboard, canoe, or swim in Todd Lake, but you can’t drive a motorized boat at any time.
Day Passes are required for Todd Lake in Oregon, available from https://store.oregonstateparks.org/, and cost $5 for 1 day, $30 for one year, or $50 for two years. Parking is close to the lake, making it an easy hike for young people and those who aren’t the strongest walkers; we recommend a slow stroll anyway! This walk will take your breath away, as it is one of the most scenic sights in all of Oregon, so you’re not going to want to miss a minute of it.
Once at Todd Lake, there’s plenty to do. Hike the trails that surround the lake, fish on the banks of the lake, or rent a canoe and spend a peaceful afternoon catching the night’s dinner—or not! Sometimes the best part of a successful fishing trip involves nothing more than soaking up the atmosphere, getting in a relaxing nap, and having your breath taken away.
