The town of Bend, Oregon has grown exponentially over the past couple of years, evolving from a sleepy mountain town to a bustling resort town full of life! Providing Some of the Most Amazing Views in All of Bend
If there’s one thing that has both locals and tourists alike coming back year after year to Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint…well, the answer is in the name: It’s the amazing and incredible views! Pilot Butte is a lava dome that is located just to the east of downtown Bend, rising approximately 500 feet above the surrounding plains. This provides visitors with some of the most amazing views of the town of Bend and the surrounding wilderness that you can’t get anywhere else!
About the Trails Themselves
The trails that head up Pilot Butte to the Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint are approximately 1.8 miles long and are heavily trafficked throughout the year by bikes, hikers, runners, and more. This trail is considered to be on the easier side, so it is perfect for explorers of all ages and skill levels to experience, and it is even pet friendly as long as they are kept on a leash at all times. The base of the mountain itself to the summit is approximately one mile.

Are you new to hiking, or want to learn a little more about the area as a whole? Well, you’re in luck! The Oregon State Parks service offers guided tours to the summit of Pilot Butte on most Thursdays at 7-7:30pm. The schedule varies, so make sure to visit them online here. Ranger Garretson and other guest speakers will be there to provide fun and insight on the formations of the Cascade Mountains, the area around as a whole, and so much more!
