About the Crane Prairie Reservoir

The Crane Prairie Reservoir in Oregon is approximately 42 miles to the southwest of Bend. It is a completely man-made lake that is named for the cranes that thrive in its habitat. The reservoir is arguably one of the most beautiful spots that you’ll anywhere in the Bend area in that it is surrounded by old growth pine and snow-capped volcanoes; this leads to some of the most breathtaking views of Mother Nature around!

The Home of Trout Fishing in the Deschutes National Forest

If there’s one reason above all else that thousands of visitors flock to the Crane Prairie Reservoir every single year, it’s that you can simply find some of the best trout fishing in all of Oregon there! The Crane Prairie Reservoir serves as one of Oregon’s biggest rainbow trout fisheries and is home to some of the best fly fishing in the entire northwest. In addition to rainbow trout, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife also manages the populations of mountain whitefish, brook trout, and largemouth bass. What does that mean for you? No more disappointing days out on the water, that’s what! You can have confidence knowing that the reservoir is well stocked, which means more bites and more fun.

Plenty of Space to Set up Camp

Located within a minute or two walk of the water is the Crane Prairie Campground, a large campground with over 140 sites to choose from! Many campsites are available for advanced reservation, and they can get busy during the peak months, so we recommend looking into this option. The open season for camping at the ground is from May through October, and it is even pet friendly as long as they are kept on a leash. If on your next vacation you’re looking to escape from your hectic everyday life and reconnect with your roots in nature with camping and fishing, then the Crane Prairie Reservoir in Oregon might just be perfect for you!
