Benham Falls East Trailhead Recreation Area

If you’re looking for a beautiful picnic spot located just outside the city of Bend, look no further than Benham Falls! It’s actually more of a rapids than a classic waterfall, and is navigable only by the best of boaters. For the rest of us, you can enjoy your day by hiking the Deschutes Trail, mountain biking, taking gorgeous photographs, or just relaxing with your loved ones. The trailhead area offers picnic tables and vault toilets for your comfort, but no water, so come prepared in advance. Kayaking, Biking, and Hiking, oh My!

No matter which sport you prefer, Benham Falls Trailhead offers something for you. Kayakers can launch their vessels here to head upriver on the Deschutes. Mountain bikers love the Deschutes River Trail as well, and in certain areas the trail divides into two paths: one for cyclists, and one for hikers. Hikers will enjoy the 11 total miles of beautiful riverside trail here. Take a walk that’s just right for you, whether it’s a short stroll with the whole family, or an all-day trek. Be sure to pack plenty of snacks!

Hiking in Sunriver Oregon in All Seasons

No matter what time of year you visit Bend, Benham Falls east trailhead is easy to access. The trailhead parking area is only about half a mile from the falls themselves, so it’s a hike the whole family can enjoy. If you visit in the summer, make sure to bring plenty of insect repellent! Dogs are also welcome on this trail, though they must be leashed for the safety and comfort of all visitors. In low-snow years, this trail remains usable for most of the year.

Be Mindful of Others

This trailhead area is very popular, so please keep in mind a few safety concerns. Always remember to pack enough water and food for the length of the hike you plan to do, as well as proper clothing and footwear. Keep a close watch on children near the edge of trails, as in some places, the trail is right above the river bank, and it’s a fast-flowing river. Mountain bikers, please remember that you are sharing the trail with hikers and other cyclists, so be mindful of that. And hikers, keep an eye out for mountain bikes! Also, please remember to pick up after your dog so that other visitors will also enjoy Benham Falls after you.
