Palm Canyon

Named for its incredible swathes of palm trees that rival those of the Middle East, Palm Canyon is an iconic sightseeing and recreation destination that is well worth visiting during your Palm Springs vacation. Find out more below about what makes Palm Canyon such a special place to visit during your stay!

See the Place Where Palm Springs Got Its Name

Easily accessible by way of Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Canyon is one of the four famed canyons that make up the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons. Renowned for its vibrant natural beauty, Palm Canyon is an oasis in the midst of the desert surrounding Palm Springs.

Many visitors to Palm Canyon begin their journey at the Trading Post, a small shop that offers trail maps, refreshments, and Native American and desert-themed arts and crafts.

Palm Canyon trails include 15 miles of terrain along which visitors can hike and horseback ride while taking in the awe-inspiring scenery. It is home to the greatest collection of California Fan Palms in the world, which line the streams within the first mile of the canyon trail. Here, you can see the dynamic landscape that gave Palm Springs its name. The lush desert greenery makes for a stunning contrast against the backdrop of desolate desert lands and spectacularly colored rock formations reminiscent of an alien planet.

Fern Canyon and its moderately difficult four-mile hiking trail can also be found just off of Palm Canyon. While the actual length of the trail is four miles, it takes an extra six miles to reach Fern Canyon by way of Palm Canyon Trail or Wildhorse Trail.

Whether you decide to push yourself on a challenging hike or take it easy with a leisurely stroll through the beginning portion of the trail during your time in Palm Canyon, there are awe-inspiring sights waiting for you that will make for a memorable, one of a kind vacation experience during your time in Palm Springs.
