Moorten Botanical Garden Palm Springs

A lush and verdant paradise in the heart of Palm Springs, the Moorten Botanical Garden is a gorgeous attraction that you won’t want to miss during your vacation. Read on below for more information on why the Moorten Botanical Garden in Palm Springs is one of the most amazing places to visit!

An Oasis in the Desert of Palm Springs

The Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium began with one family’s love of the desert and its dynamic plant species. Founded in 1939 by Palm Springs celebrity couple Chester “Cactus Slim” and Patricia Moorten (famous for their work involving the design of Frontierland in Disneyland), the Moorten Botanical Garden is a family-run operation that showcases an expansive display of botanical wonders from deserts around the world over the course of 1 acre.

Here, you’ll encounter plants from the Mojave Desert, the Gran Desierto de Altar in Mexico, the Baja California Peninsula, and Karoo from South Africa. The plant species are organized and displayed by geographical region, with matching terrains of gold-mining relics, fossils, crystals, and rocks to set the stage for visitors. The garden continues to be curated by the Moorten family, and the Moorten family home, Cactus Castle, is located onsite.

For the best experience at Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium, you’ll want to allow for at least an hour’s worth of exploration. You can also take a guided tour of the gardens, though it’s recommended that you book ahead of time.

You can even take home a bit of the botanical gardens’ magic from the plant nursery onsite. Before doing so, however, we highly recommend checking to make sure that you’re allowed to take them back home before purchasing any plants.

You’ll find the Moorten Botanical Gardens in Palm Springs about a mile and a half from downtown Palm Springs, closed on Wednesdays with varying hours depending on the season. Admission ranges from $2.00 for children ages 15 years and younger to $5.00 for adults and seniors. Admission is free for children under 5 years old.
