Outdoor Adventures on Oahu
There’s truly so much so see here on this vibrant and beautiful island, it’s hard to know where to begin. But you might as well begin at the beach! Waikiki Beach is world-renowned for many reasons, beginning with its beautiful white sand, safe swimming, and easy beginners’ surf spots. It’s still one of the best places in the world to learn how to surf, so go ahead and take a lesson with one of the seasoned beach boys you’ll find here.
Next, how about a boat ride? Catamarans depart straight from the beach for daytime and sunset sails, and head straight out towards the landmark Laeahi (Diamond Head). You’ll be rewarded with an incredible view of the coastline, including all the famous hotels of Waikiki and the old Natatorium, a World War I monument that is now crumbling away (but still impressive). Get a peek at the huge mansions along the shoreline of Laeahi, including Shangri La, the former Doris Duke estate. For extra excitement, be sure to sit right on the trampoline of the catamaran and get splashed with the waves!
If you enjoy walking or jogging, there’s practically no more lovely place to do it anywhere than in Kapiolani Park at the end of Waikiki. This huge urban park is home to tennis courts, a bandstand, the Waikiki Shell concert venue, and the Honolulu Zoo, and right across the street on the waterfront, you’ll find the Waikiki Aquarium, a small but excellent stop for learning about the local marine life. And of course, Waikiki is chock-full of endless shops to peruse, whether you’re looking for designer items or just a few souvenir t-shirts. If you’d rather ride than walk on your explorations, rent some Biki bikes, a convenient and affordable way to explore Waikiki’s sights!
If you’re renting a car during Easter in Oahu, you have the option of traveling further afield for outdoor activities. Check out windward side beaches, like Kailua, where kite surfing and kayaking are popular pastimes, or else head to the North Shore, and explore Haleiwa town and the world-famous Waimea Bay (beware of very steep shorebreak). You can also just continue driving around the whole island, as it can easily be done in a day, with plenty of time for stops at roadside eateries.
For plant lovers, or those who just enjoy a good walk among the trees, there are numerous excellent arboretums on Oahu. Visit dryland species at Koko Crater, where you’ll be surprised to see the size of some of the cactus! Check out super-lush tropicals at Lyon Arboretum in the back of Manoa Valley (plan for likely rain and mud); take a walk to the nearby Manoa Falls while you’re back there. And, for some of the biggest and most incredible trees in town, stop by urban Foster Gardens near Chinatown; a close friend of King Kalakaua started these gardens by growing Hawaii’s first vineyard here, over 150 years ago.
Indoor Enjoyment
Though we’d like to imagine that Oahu is always sunny and beautiful, it’s prudent to remember that there’s a reason everything grows so lush and green: rain. Make a plan in advance for rainy day activities, and you won’t be disappointed if it happens during your trip. Bishop Museum is always a great place for a rainy day, as you can dive deep into Hawaiian and Pacific culture, learn about science and natural history, as well as visit the planetarium to see Hawaii’s night sky in different seasons. If traveling with little ones, the Children’s Discovery Center in Kakaako is another excellent spot to spend a morning. Finally, Ala Moana Shopping Center has something for everyone, as it’s a massive world-class mall that’s open-air, but you won’t get rained on.
