Lei Day Celebration

When you think of Hawaii, it’s hard not to picture a colorful Lei hanging around your neck. These floral arrangements have long been a symbol of welcome and friendship and are often delivered to visitors quickly upon arrival to the islands. In 1928, the lei took its place as an official state icon with the conception of Lei Day. Prepare to enjoy a moment where the lei takes center stage and fun, family, friendship and Hawaiian culture are honored in colorful style when you find your Hawaiian travels correspond to the annual Lei Day celebration.

A May Day Tradition

Lei Day is celebrated May 1st of every year across the Hawaiian Islands with a vast number of ceremonies, events, and performances marking this fun and family-friendly holiday. Lei Day celebrations began as a tribute to the traditional process of making and wearing leis but quickly transformed into a full-on celebration of fun and time with family and friends as the years went by. Today, residents celebrate Lei Day in Hawaii in place of May Day and use the set aside time to enjoy a variety of exciting events. Oahu is known for hosting one of the most spectacular Lei Day celebration events at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. This event is a captivating combination of lei making demonstrations, Hula performances, food, drinks, music and more! The Oahu Lei Day celebration is free to the public and invites guests to come and enjoy a stress-free and creative day together. If you plan on staying into the evening hours, make your way to Waikiki Beach where a free concert is held between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm for all to enjoy!

Lei Day Royalty

Be sure to pay respect where it’s due to the Lei Queen and her court when you attend the annual Lei Day Celebrations. Every year, a royal Lei Day Queen is elected in a wide-ranging competition that factors in Hawaiian language proficiency, lei making skill and hula ability. The leis that are submitted for judging can be viewed and admired in all their intricate beauty at the competition stands at Kapiolani Park.
