Kauai Transportation

HomeKauai Guest InformationKauai Transportation

Here’s our list of the most important tips for Kauai transportation. Note: Reading this will make your life a lot easier (read, less traffic).

By Car

We highly recommend renting a car while you’re in Kaua’i. The island has one road that rings the island (except along the Na Pali Coast), and in most places, it’s a two-lane highway. Most speed zones have 50 mph limits. Frommer’s recommends taking bypass roads in Kipu (when heading north from Poipu) and Kapaa (when heading south) when you hit rush hour, which is roughly 6am to 9 am and 3pm to 6 pm.

There are tons of car rental companies on the island, including major companies such as Enterprise and Hertz. For short trips, Uber is a great option.

Airport Shuttle

The island offers several options for Kauai transportation from the airport. Some include Speed-iShuttle, Pono Express and Aloha Spirit Shuttle.

Kauai Transportation by Scooter

Drivers 21 years and older can rent scooters or heavyweight “hogs.” Riding a scooter can be a great way to travel around Hawaii. With the beautiful weather, drives along the coastline are absolutely stunning. Stop frequently for hikes, beach walks and afternoon cocktails.

Kauai Harley-Davidson and Kauai Mopeds are great resources for this. Prices at Kauai Mopeds start at $65 a day for a 49cc scooter and increase with bigger, more powerful rides. The company also rents motorcycles. Prices at Kauai Harley-Davidson start at $99 for a full day.

By Bus

The Kaua’i Bus operates a public fixed-route bus service and a door-to-door bus service from Hanalei to Kekaha daily. The bus runs along the entire coast, with the exception of the Napali Coast. Registration 24 hours in advance is required for door-to-door service. Each trip is just $2 for adults and $1 for seniors and youth.
