When you hear the expression, “The Ruins,” you might automatically think of the ancient ruins of Greece or Rome, but there are some more recent ruins located in Hood River at the Springhouse Cellar Winery. “The Ruins” are actually the charred remains of the eastern wall of the building in which the winery is housed. A 1950’s fire destroyed that part of the building. Today, the winery uses The Ruins to host fabulous outdoor concerts and events and serve some of the best wine and food that Oregon has to offer.
The Springhouse Cellar Winery
The Springhouse Cellar makes small batch wines with grapes that are carefully selected from vineyards in the Columbia Gorge. The wines are designed to pair well with food. The winery itself is housed in a century-old building that was once a pear cannery, at 13 Railroad Street in Hood River. The buildings classic look makes it a popular place to have a wedding. Brides and grooms can choose to have their ceremony inside the winery or they can add a touch of gothic romance to the proceedings by having it outside at the Ruins. The venue was voted “Best Urban Place to Have a Wedding” by Oregon Bride Magazine in 2017.
Tastings
The tasting room at the Springhouse Cellar is open from noon to 6:00 pm daily. They are closed on Mondays from November to March. You can get a flight of reds and whites for just $10.00 in the tasting room and that fee is waived if you buy two bottles of vino. They have a small bites menu that includes some delicious cheeses, figs and bread. They have a knowledgeable staff that can help you select the perfect food and wine paring.
Events
Every Tuesday the winery host live music on the stage of The Ruins. The concerts start at 6:00 pm and feature local bands and plenty of dancing.
